Paint Color Consultations: See Your New Colors Before We Paint

November 03, 2026•5 min read

Have you ever wanted to paint a room, but stopped yourself?

You found a color you love. You held up the little paint chip. But you just couldn't picture it on a whole wall, or on every kitchen cabinet.

What if you paint it and hate it?

You're not alone. We hear this from homeowners all the time. Not knowing how a new color will look holds a lot of people back.

That's why every client who accepts their estimate gets a color consultation. Here's how it works, with a real kitchen we're painting this week.

Winter offer: $200 off every $1,000 on interior painting projects of $5,000 or more. There's no cap. A $7,000 job costs you $5,600. Request your free estimate by Sunday, November 15. See how the winter painting offer works.

Why It's So Hard to Picture a New Color

  • A paint chip is tiny. A color can look very different on a whole wall.

  • Light changes everything. Our low winter sun makes colors look darker in north-facing rooms. In sunny rooms, they look brighter.

  • What's staying matters. Your counters, floors, roof or brick can change how a color looks.

So picking from a chip is hard, even for people who love design.

What Is a Color Consultation?

A color consultation is extra help picking your colors before we paint. We do one for every client who accepts their estimate and wants to move forward. It can be an interior or exterior project.

Right now, it's included at no extra charge. It's just one more perk of working with us!

How Our Color Consultations Work

  1. Send us a photo of your space. Your kitchen, your living room or the front of your house. Whatever we're painting.

  2. Give us your color direction. Do you want it warmer? Lighter? Are you dreaming of green? Tell us what you love and what you don't.

  3. We try out different colors. We make mock-ups of your space in a few colors. That way, you get a feel for the look.

  4. You pick your favorite. Then we get to work!

A Real Color Consultation: One Kitchen, Three Looks

We're starting this kitchen cabinet job this week. The homeowners wanted a fresh look.

The Kitchen Today

Here's the photo they sent us. The cabinets are honey oak with a warm orange tone. A little paint can make them feel brand new.

Option 1: Dried Thyme SW 6186

Dried Thyme is a deep, earthy green (LRV 21). Sherwin-Williams calls it a great pick for kitchen cabinets. It looks rich next to the steel stove and the light wood floor.

Option 2: Ivory Lace SW 7013

Ivory Lace is a bright, creamy white (LRV 79). It makes the whole kitchen feel lighter and more open.

Option 3: Clary Sage SW 6178

Clary Sage is a soft herbal green with a little warmth (LRV 41). It's lighter than Dried Thyme, but it still brings in color.

Seeing all three side by side makes the choice so much easier. Which one would you pick?

A quick tip: Screens show color a little differently than real life. So before you decide, look at a sample in your own light. Check it in the morning and at night.

Color Consultations for Exterior Projects, Too

A new exterior color is a big decision. You see it every time you pull into the driveway, and so do your neighbors!

We do color consultations for exterior painting projects too. Send us a photo of the front of your house. We'll try out colors on the siding, trim and front door. Then you can see the look first.

Exterior paint needs mild, dry weather. Around here, that's a spring job. So winter is a great time to plan your colors! Need ideas? Read our guides to dark vs. light exterior colors and front door paint colors.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Color Consultation

  • Take your photo in daylight. Stand back so we can see the whole space.

  • Show what's staying. Counters, floors, the roof or brick all affect which colors look best.

  • Save pictures you love. Screenshots from Pinterest or Instagram help us see your style.

  • Tell us what you don't like. That helps just as much!
