If This Were My House: Our Favorite Exterior Paint Makeover for a 1990s Home
If This Were My House: How We'd Update This Faded 1990s Home for Maximum Curb Appeal

There are certain homes that instantly take us back to the late 90s and early 2000s.
You know the ones.
The landscaping is mature. The layout is great. The neighborhood is established. The home has good bones.
But somewhere along the way, the exterior paint started fading, the colors lost their charm, and the house no longer has the same "wow" factor it once did.
Recently, Kenneth and I were looking at a home similar to the one pictured below, and we started asking ourselves:
"If this were our house, what would we do?"
The answer was surprisingly simple.
Not a major renovation.
Not tearing anything apart.
Just a thoughtful exterior makeover that would completely transform the way the home feels.
Step 1: Lighten Up the Body Color
The first thing we would change is the main body color.
Many homes built during this era were painted in shades of tan, beige, or taupe that felt warm and inviting at the time but can look a little dated today.
For this home, we would choose:
Sherwin-Williams Accessible Beige (SW 7036)

Despite the name, Accessible Beige is actually a beautiful greige (gray-beige) color. It feels fresh, sophisticated, and timeless without looking cold or trendy.
It's the kind of color that works just as well today as it will ten years from now.
Step 2: Brighten the Trim
One thing we notice on many older homes is that the trim and windows tend to blend into the body color.
By brightening the trim, you instantly create a cleaner and more polished appearance.
Our choice:
Sherwin-Williams Alabaster (SW 7008)

Alabaster is one of our favorite whites because it's soft and welcoming rather than stark and sterile.
We would paint:
Window trim
Fascia
Soffits
Porch railings
Decorative trim details
This would help the windows stand out while creating a crisp, finished look.
Step 3: Add Contrast with Black Accents
This is where the transformation really starts to happen.
For the shutters and front door, we would use:
Sherwin-Williams Iron Ore (SW 7069)

Iron Ore is one of the most popular exterior accent colors for a reason.
It's dark and dramatic without being harsh.
The black shutters would frame the windows beautifully, while the black front door would create an inviting focal point that naturally draws your eye toward the entrance.
Step 4: Refresh the Porch

Sometimes the smallest details create the biggest impact.
We wouldn't change the porch itself.
Instead, we'd simply make it feel more welcoming.
A few ideas:
Fresh hanging flower baskets
Matching planters near the front door
Updated black light fixtures
New house numbers
Fresh mulch in the landscape beds
These simple upgrades help create the feeling that the home is loved and cared for.
Step 5: Let the Landscaping Shine
One of the best features of mature neighborhoods is the landscaping.
Large shade trees, established shrubs, and lush lawns take years to develop.
When paired with a fresh exterior paint color, all of that beautiful greenery becomes part of the home's curb appeal.
The soft greige body color would allow the landscaping to become the star of the show while the black accents provide just enough contrast to keep everything feeling modern.
The Final Result

What we love most about this makeover is that it doesn't require changing the architecture of the home.
The roof stays.
The siding stays.
The porch stays.
The character stays.
We're simply giving the home a fresh coat of confidence.
The finished palette would be:
Body: Sherwin-Williams Accessible Beige (SW 7036)
Trim & Railings: Sherwin-Williams Alabaster (SW 7008)
Shutters: Sherwin-Williams Iron Ore (SW 7069)
Front Door: Sherwin-Williams Iron Ore (SW 7069)
The result is a home that feels brighter, more current, more inviting, and ready for another decade of making memories.
